A sample delivery. #glutenfree #local #primal

If you follow me on any social media at all, you probably know my love for The Hot Pot, a small family owned restaurant in my neighborhood that is very Paleo friendly.  We were the first family to eat dinner there on their opening day, and have continued to be frequent customers and friends.  After nearly a decade of staying home with my kids, I decided to start spending a few hours a week working there.  I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work at a place that supports our community the way they do allows me to work around the kids’ schedules.

I was in a bit of a panic at the prospect of  working and NEEDING to stay on top of our healthy eating.  I decided there really wasn’t a better time to finally try out Green BEAN delivery service.  We have been ordering on and off for several months now and I couldn’t be more pleased. (If you are already sold on the idea, use this special promo code “bc5pfpa” to receive $15 off your first order! Offer good until June 4, 2015.)

The process:

  • You sign up for a produce bin of your choice (several size and cost options ranging from $35 to $49 per week).
  • Each week you customize your bin, they give you a sample selection, but you can alter it as long as you hit your minimum.
  • Then you can add groceries! (You don’t have to, but trust me, you will.)
  • Groceries are delivered. (For free!)
  • Unpack your bins and set them back outside to exchange next week.

My favorite things about the service:

  • Everything has been fresh and delicious. We haven’t had one bad piece of produce. The greens are especially delicious!
  • I can still buy some of my favorite local products & have found some new (local to the Midwest) products.
  • You can search grocery items by gluten free.
  • I can take inventory of my fridge and plan ahead for recipes on my computer, just a few steps away.
  • You can postpone deliveries easily with no penalty (going out of town, still have plenty from last week, etc…).
  • Prices are almost exactly the same as the grocery stores and health food stores I frequent, and sometimes there are sales.
  • I think we are saving a bit of money from not going to the store as often and making impulse purchases.
  • Anyone with a log-in can make the order from a computer. The kids even help.

Some of the Paleo/Primal/Gluten-free  items they carry:

  • Local eggs
  • Kombucha
  • Applegate farms lunchmeats
  • Local dairy products, including whole milk & cream & grassfed butter!
  • Udi’s gluten free products and other gluten free baked goods
  • pantry staples such as olive oil, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar…
  • dairy alternatives like almond milk, coconut milk & etc…
  • all the paleo/primal baking staples, at similar prices to the grocery store

Lots of gluten free options available in the grocery store!

Overall I have been extremely please with the service & will continue to use it.  I plan on mixing in Grean Bean with our every other month trip to Costco and occasional grocery store trips.  It works really well for us to look at our calendar and see how busy it is to decide which weeks we get deliveries!

The kids enjoy helping me unpack and the invoice is so easy to read that the kids have taken an interest in really talking about how much the different items cost & how important it is not to waste food.  We can have a much longer conversation about those things at home than we can in a busy grocery store.

I can see this service being really useful for a few different types of people:

  • busy families (especially ones with new babies/young kids)
  • people that don’t like to grocery shop (I don’t understand these people, but they do exist!)
  • busy professionals (shop from work!) that want to make local and organic choices, but don’t have the time to shop around at farmer’s markets sourcing ingredients
  • small businesses to keep food in their offices for employees

Don’t forget, if you want to give it a try, you can use this special promotional code”bc5pfpa” to recieve $15 off your first order. This code expires on June 4, 2015!

Did you try it? Do you love it? Do you use a similar service in another location? Tell me about it in the comments!
